More water for South Africa
People need water to live. They drink it, clean with it, and more. Since 2015, parts of South Africa have faced a drought. Officials in the city of Cape Town even feared running out of water. But there is hope. Leaders say things are looking wetter for South Africa!
This was one of the worst droughts in the country’s history. The dry spell hit the southern and western parts of South Africa. Dams began drying up. Farmers grew fewer vegetables. Officials worried that travelers wouldn’t visit. Cape Town especially is a big tourist spot. With fewer visitors, the city would lose money.
City leaders began counting down to Day Zero, the time when the water would run out. This name drew attention to the problem. People in the city made rules to save water. They started taking shorter showers, flushing toilets less, and doing laundry less often. Some people even suggested towing a freshwater iceberg from Antarctica to Africa!
The weather helped too. In recent months, there has been more rain in the nation. The first days of July even brought snow. People traveled for hours to see the blanket of white. For some, it was their first time seeing snow! The frosty flakes would melt into much-needed water.
South Africans are starting to see improvements. For the first time in 18 months, six important dams were more than half full. Cape Town officials said that Day Zero is being pushed back even further. According to experts, the city won’t run out of water this year or next. In fact, it’s possible that it may never run out of water.
This is good news for South Africans and tourists. “Travelers are invited to come and enjoy,” said Cape Town leaders. But that doesn’t mean people can just go back to normal. Officials added that visitors should “still be mindful of water-wise tourism and treat water as a precious resource.”
21. The drought starting in 2015 was one of the worst droughts in the history of South Africa.
22. How would the drought affect tourism, especially in Cape Town?
24. It snows often in South Africa.

Man’s best friend? Why having a dog is good for you.
Research shows that dogs can have a positive effect on our health and make us happier at work!
The relationships that we have with our pets are often very important to us. For many dog owners, their dog is a good friend and a special member of the family. However, scientists have shown that these relationships are important in other ways, too. We find out why.
Dogs need regular exercise and that means their owners get exercise regularly, too! Most people who don’t have dogs walk for around 170 minutes per week, but people who have dogs walk almost twice as much – about 300 minutes a week. Also, a person who is walking a puppy walks 28% faster than a person who isn’t walking with a dog! This exercise can help us to lose weight and keep our hearts healthy.
Dogs have many benefits for elderly people, too. Older dog owners spend almost 90 minutes more outside than older people who don’t have dogs. They also spend 90 minutes per day talking to their dogs. This can reduce stress, helping older people to stay healthier and to visit the doctor less often.
Owning a dog can also help us to meet new people and make friends. More than 80% of people who have dogs talk to their neighbors while they are exercising their pets. In fact, dog owners talk to strangers roughly 20 times more often than people who don’t have dogs.
Many big businesses, including Google, Amazon, and the ice cream company Ben & Jerry’s, allow their employees to bring their dogs to work. These companies know that having pets in the office can help to improve relationships between colleagues. Figures show that employees in offices with dogs made complaints about each other 30% less often – this suggests that having dogs in the office helps us to trust the people we work with.
There are other benefits for businesses, too. Dogs help people to be more active during their work day, for example, by going for a walk at lunchtime. Many adults in the U.S. spend over seven hours per day sitting down – moving more during the day can help employees to be more creative and hard-working and this can help a company to earn more money!
