The Ghan: The longest North-South train trip in the world.
TIME: 3 DAYS, 2 NIGHTS
DISTANCE: 2,979 KM
The Ghan is probably one of the most amazing train trips in the world, and it is definitely one of the longest! The train travels almost 3,000 km from Adelaide in the south of Australia to Darwin in the north. Perhaps you’re thinking that “Ghan” is a strange name for a train. Some of the first people to make this trip through the center of Australia were from Afghanistan, so the word comes from the name of their home country. That was in the 19th century – traveling was certainly a lot more difficult then! Now it’s much easier to see this beautiful part of Australia.
When you travel on the Ghan, you don’t have to worry about anything – we are famous for taking care of our passengers. We are also famous for our food! You can enjoy great meals in the train restaurant while you travel, and try foods like kangaroo meat, or quandong, an Australian fruit. The rooms on the train are very comfortable, too. Most rooms have two beds, closets, a table, and a small bathroom, and some rooms also include armchairs and a DVD player.
During the trip, you can get off the train, and see more of the Australian countryside. When we arrive in Alice Springs on the second day of the trip, you can visit the Alice Springs Desert Park and learn more about the animals of this area. Or how about having a barbecue under the stars in the evening? On the third day, in Katherine, you can take a boat trip on the river, or take a helicopter to see the beautiful Nitmiluk National Park from the sky.
